Know Why

To break free successfully, as in any endeavour, you have to have a reason why. Now we are getting to the heart of the matter.
Ask yourself why you want to be self dependent and find freedom.
Is it to be fashionable or appear cool to your friends? That might not be a strong enough reason.
Or is it to break free of the controls on your time and money? That might be stronger.
There will be obstacles and criticism during your attempts in breaking free. People will tell you that you are an idiot and you need to get a ‘good job.’
If you are working on the Internet, as I am, there will be countless people pointing out where you go wrong and inferring you are stupid for not knowing something.
I know, this has happened to me many, many times already. The trouble with the Internet is that others can say anything they like with no comeback. It is the medium for bullies.
You may also experience an outside interruption such as a failed romance or a family disaster. You may have an equipment failure or the Internet may crash or a financial crisis or an infinite number of crises as you are going it alone.
To break free through all this requires a strong determination, a good reason why.
Watch a sprinter at the Olympics. See where his or her eyes are during the race. On the finish line every time. They are concentrating on where they want to be – their reason is to cross that line.
Concentrate on where you want to be and it will all come right. Ignore all the distractions, as you are breaking free. Ignore all those idiots who feel they can bolster their ego by criticising you. Drive for that finish line whatever it may. Find freedom, however you define it.
But understand this…
You may also consider whether you really do want to find freedom.
Whether you are really interested in breaking free.
There are those who are quite happy in a job. There are some good jobs too. Who would not want to have Jeremy Clarkson’s job, for example?
This might be you. Perhaps your abilities do not lie in breaking free but in the corporate environment. If this is you, go with my blessing. The key is for you to feel fulfilled and happy.
I have to confess that I have struggled with this myself recently. Indeed, the reason for writing this at all is I am going through a period now when I am wondering if I really want to be self dependent and break free or I would not be better off finding myself a nice ‘safe job’ (actually, I know no job is safe anyway).
I hope I will continue to break free. But I need to rediscover my reason why.
